The illusion of movement created from seemingly static objects is an element Kristina Fjellman is constantly striving to achieve in her work.
Fjellman says, “Like the microscopic shifts in our human bodies to the cosmic movement of a galaxy, the parts of the whole are always in motion and that is what much of this body of artwork is focused around. Light and shadow and how those elements play off the colors, textures, and shapes within the finished piece are also part of my process. The artwork in this collection are my interpretations of color and composition of the natural world around me—some fantastic, and some grounded. These pieces connect something in my mind to the fascinating universe around us.”
About the Artist
Kristina Fjellman is a visual artist and performer and is drawn to creative projects that will combine both of these passions. She has exhibited her sculpture in venues around the Midwest and Twin Cities and was a recipient of a Jerome Fiber Artist Project Grant for 2010-2011 at the Minnesota Textile Center.
Her performance work includes: The Theater of the Tiny Clandestines, Birds of Passage, and The Memory Box of the Sisters Fox with The Winding Sheet Outfit; Works In Progress My Life Is All But Over at the Red Eye Theatre; and 9 shows with Sandbox.
She recently installed a large fiber piece in the lobby of Canopy Hilton in downtown Minneapolis, which opened in March.
Kristina is a graduate of St. Catherine University with a Master of Arts in Education in both Art and Theater Education, an ensemble member of Sandbox Theatre and a founding member of The Winding Sheet Outfit. Much of her fiber work is represented by Gilded Pear Gallery in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
